Calisen’s Commitment to a Greener Future Through Eco Schools

At Calisen, we believe in creating a cleaner, more sustainable world for everyone. That’s why we’re thrilled to be a part of Keep Britain Tidy’s ‘Eco Schools’ programme, an inspiring initiative that helps young people take charge of environmental change. Since 2022, we’ve proudly helped fund 40 schools in their journey to becoming more sustainable and creating greener spaces for learning.

Empowering the next generation of eco champions

Eco Schools is a pupil-led programme designed to educate and engage children and young people on vital environmental issues, including energy use, waste reduction and carbon footprint reduction.

Young people today are more aware than ever of environmental challenges, from climate change to biodiversity loss. Since 1994, Eco Schools has provided a practical, impactful framework for schools worldwide, simplifying the path to action with a seven-step framework that serve as a guide to connect global environmental goals with practical, everyday actions that students can adopt.

For the past three years, Calisen has been supporting schools right here in Greater Manchester by covering the costs of their Green Flag applications - a globally recognised award that celebrates their environmental achievements.

The 20 schools we supported in the last academic year achieved remarkable results:

•    6,100 pupils were introduced to environmental education

•    £4,100 was raised for charities as part of the programme

•    560 trees were planted, and 494kg of waste was diverted from landfill

•    9,200 square meters of natural habitats were created or maintained

A focus on smarter energy

Last year, Calisen took on an additional role by sponsoring the Eco Schools Energy module. Schools working on the “Energy” module embraced the 3 R’s: reviewing energy usage, reducing consumption and increasing the use of renewable sources. As a result, they are not only cutting carbon, but also saving money.

Here’s how the Energy module made a tangible impact:

•   7,341 pupils took on the role of energy monitors, making sure resources were used efficiently
•   250,157 energy-saving devices were introduced, including motion-sensing lights, efficient bulbs, electrical timers, and smart meters
•    4,130 renewable energy sources were implemented, including solar panels and heat pumps
•    4,629,865 kWh of gas and 4,014,030 kWh of electricity were saved compared to last year

Bringing sustainability to life in the classroom

Our involvement doesn’t stop at funding. Calisen’s Commercial Director, Ben Etherington, a passionate beekeeper, has been visiting schools to hold “bee assemblies.” Armed with honey and beekeeping gear, Ben shares his knowledge on the importance of bees and biodiversity, sparking curiosity and respect for nature among students.

Inspiring hope and action

Together with Eco Schools, Calisen is lighting the way toward a brighter, greener future. We’re proud to support young people and educators who are working to protect our planet, and we look forward to continuing our journey to bring smarter energy solutions for all.
