Octopus Energy and Calisen Accelerate Smart Meter Rollout

10 February 2025

Overview:
●    Partnership for Financing Smart Meters
●    First-of-its-kind partnership accelerates the rollout of intelligent metering systems (iMSys)
●    Octopus Energy installs smart meters free of charge

Octopus Energy (Octopus Energy Metering Germany GmbH) and Calisen (Calisen International Holdings Limited) are launching a strategic partnership for the financing and operation of smart meters in Germany. Under this cooperation, Calisen will finance the intelligent metering systems (iMSys) for Octopus Energy, enabling Octopus, as a metering point operator, to accelerate the smart meter rollout and equip customers with intelligent meters.

In Germany, this partnership is the first of its kind and establishes a new market segment with Calisen as the first Meter Asset Provider. The collaboration aims to speed up the widespread rollout of smart meters, granting as many households as possible access to new, intelligent electricity tariffs. At the same time, Octopus and Calisen aim to create a more attractive metering market. This gives Octopus customers a zero cost option in upgrading their metering technology to smart.
Octopus Energy ensures that, as part of this collaboration, customers will continue to receive a smart meter free of charge when they sign up for an intelligent tariff. Due to the high acquisition and installation costs, many other providers pass part of these costs on to customers or delay the rollout.

The partnership in Germany seamlessly builds on the longstanding collaboration between the two companies in the UK, where the model has already proven successful.

Merlind Schatz, CFO of Octopus Energy Germany, commented:
“We are delighted to continue our partnership with Calisen here in Germany. Our long and successful collaboration is not only built on trust but also on our shared mission to make the energy transition accessible to everyone. Smart meters are essential in achieving this goal, empowering people to actively participate in the energy transition and benefit from it financially.”

Brandon Rennet, CFO of Calisen, added: “We are thrilled to expand our partnership with Octopus Energy into Germany. This collaboration is not just a strategic alignment of two innovative companies, but a step forward towards a sustainable future. By enabling faster deployment of smart meters, we're not only enhancing energy efficiency but also empowering consumers to take control of their energy usage. Together, we're setting a new standard in the industry, and I am confident that this partnership will yield significant benefits for our customers and for the broader energy market.”
